Christian. Husband. Dad. Veteran. Mechanic. Combine all those and you’ve got a go-for-broke, all-in kind of guy--and that’s Ben. Mountain biking was no different when a friend first took him out on the trails, then he got his first taste of the single speed and, well, that’s all she wrote. Next to faith and family, Ben believes that community is the most influential part of someone’s life, so why not combine a passionate hobby with a group of like minded people focused on having fun and serving each other.

Nathan’s been hooked on riding since cruising around on big wheels as a kid, which, he notes: were single speed. Nathan loves calling Woodstock home, and enjoys backpacking and running ultramarathons as well as biking whenever he gets the chance.
The Single Speed Project is just like it sounds: a collective centered around biking with a single gear. Single Speed may not be the easiest way to mountain bike, but we think it’s the best way. Both simplistic and low maintenance, single speed biking forces the rider to think ahead. SS riders have a plan of attack, and they find momentum wherever they can to propel them into the trail ahead.
Single speed riding is a lot like life. We all know that we should be prepared for what’s coming, but we often put it off. Instead of living into our full potential, we sometimes lean heavily on shifting the gears just to make life easier instead of pushing our limits and growing. At SSP, we think that dropping the gears and committing to single speed will have a ripple effect on other areas of life. The preparation, momentum, and focus that we find on the trails doesn’t have to stay on the trails.
Our goal, as SSP riders, is to be a positive influence in our local MTB community. We are dedicated to supporting our local SORBA chapter and genuinely helping anyone who might cross our path. We strive for excellence, not just in mountain biking, but in every area of our lives. Finally, we are committed to showing our fellow riders The Better Side of Mountain Biking, Single Speed.
